Compact, powerful motor control for traditional 3D flight and transmitter-controlled reversible 4D operation.

The Vertex V17R is a compact 17A brushless speed controller developed for lightweight EPP aircraft. It operates as a conventional forward-only ESC for traditional 3D flying and can also provide forward and reverse thrust when correctly configured for 4D flight.

Factory-programmed BLHeli_S firmware, a powerful 6V / 3A switching BEC and pre-installed connectors make the V17R well suited for compatible 1500KV to 2000KV outrunner motors used in approximately 22 to 37-inch EPP aircraft.

Switchable 3D and 4D Operation
Use the V17R as a standard forward-only ESC or configure reverse thrust through a compatible programmable transmitter. No physical reversing switch is required on the ESC.

Recommended Setups

3D on 3S Appropriate 8-inch Slow Fly propeller

4D on 2S Compatible 8 or 9-inch reversible propeller matched to the motor KV and aircraft weight

Lighter 4D propellers generally provide faster directional changes. Higher-thrust propellers can provide stronger pull but may reverse more slowly. Always match the propeller to the motor KV, battery voltage, aircraft weight and intended flying style.

Important Initial Setup
Complete throttle calibration before attempting to arm or operate the motor for the first time. Always remove the propeller during throttle calibration, motor-direction testing or transmitter programming.

Reversible 4D operation requires a compatible motor, reversible 4D propeller and correct transmitter setup. Review the manual and setup video before enabling reverse thrust.

Installation and Safety

  • This ESC does not provide low-voltage cutoff protection. Use a flight timer and monitor battery voltage to prevent excessive LiPo discharge.
  • Confirm that the receiver and all connected servos are compatible with the 6V BEC output.
  • Install the ESC where it receives adequate cooling airflow.
  • Protect the ESC and wiring from vibration, sharp edges and mechanical strain.
  • Reverse thrust places additional stress on the motor mount and airframe. Inspect glued joints and mounting hardware regularly.
  • Check motor and ESC temperatures after the first flights.
  • Confirm that current remains within the rated operating limits.

Programming Information

The V17R arrives factory programmed for its intended 3D and 4D operation. An optional USB programming board is available for experienced users. Custom software, third-party firmware and unsupported setting changes may affect performance or reliability and are not supported by Twisted Hobbys.

    Was fortunate enough to have tested this as soon as it was released. Been using another brand and will admit I like this better.
